SAP Center

The arena at downtown’s western edge, opened in 1993 as the San Jose Arena and home of the San Jose Sharks, who call it the Shark Tank.

Voters narrowly approved local taxes for the arena in 1988, and the NHL granted San Jose a team in 1991. The Sharks played their first two seasons at the Cow Palace before moving in. The arena has carried the names San Jose Arena, Compaq Center, HP Pavilion and, since 2013, SAP Center.
