Bank of Italy Building

The 14-story tower of 1925-26 at First and Santa Clara streets, San Jose’s first skyscraper, with a green-lit spire.

Designed by Henry A. Minton, it was until 1970 the tallest building between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The Bank of Italy, later Bank of America, opened its first branch outside San Francisco in San Jose in 1909. In 2025 a new owner announced plans to restore the facade and convert the tower to about 110 homes.
