Halfdan Hussey and Kathleen Powell started it with 60 films at the Camera 3 cinema and about 3,000 viewers; by 2013 it drew more than 100,000. It gives the Maverick Spirit Awards and has used downtown venues including the California Theatre and the Hammer Theatre.
