Victory Salute

Rigo 23’s 2005 statue on San José State’s Tower Lawn of Tommie Smith and John Carlos raising their fists at the 1968 Olympics.

Smith and Carlos were San José State athletes of the Speed City era. Students raised more than $300,000 for the monument, which was unveiled on October 17, 2005. Silver medallist Peter Norman asked to be left out so visitors could stand in his place, where a plaque now reads that he stood there in solidarity.
